Japanese corporate Asahi Kasei announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Aquafil, an Italian manufacturer of polyamide 6 (PA6). The two companies agreed to work together on developing novel material for 3D printing. ITOCHU Corporation will also support this initiative, having also entered into a strategic partnership with Aquafil back in 2021.

Aquafil provides its sustainable PA6 polymer under the brand name "ECONYL" made by chemically recycling consumer waste such as fishing nets, old carpets, industrial waste, etc. On the other hand, Asahi Kasei provides cellulose nanofibers (CNF) made from cotton linter, with superior material recyclability compared to glass fibers.

The new CNF / ECONYL compound is particularly suited for applications in sectors such as aerospace and automotive. Asahi Kasei plans to begin trial sales of filament of the new compound material in the EU, US, and Japan in Q3 2025.
